Frequently Asked Questions
Philanthropic support allows Canadians to contribute voluntarily to the restoration of an important national institution, while helping reduce reliance on public funds. More importantly, this is not simply about raising money. It is about giving Canadians an opportunity to come together to help restore an important part of our shared national heritage. The Rideau Hall Foundation exists to enable that kind of collective participation, ensuring that every Canadian who wishes to contribute can do so with confidence through a trusted, experienced national charitable organization.
Restoring 24 Sussex is a once-in-a-generation national project. It requires the governance, accountability, fundraising expertise, stewardship, and long-term relationships needed to deliver a project of national significance. The Rideau Hall Foundation has more than a decade of experience managing complex, national philanthropic initiatives on behalf of Canadians. We work with individual donors, families, foundations, and community supporters to ensure every contribution is managed transparently, responsibly, and in accordance with Canada’s charitable regulations. Official charitable tax receipts will be issued for eligible gifts. The project will benefit from rigorous financial oversight, and donors can be confident that funds are used solely for the purposes for which they are given.
The RHF’s goal is to raise $50M for this project. This is a fundraising goal and not the approved or confirmed budget for the project.
Our goal is $50 million and once reached we expect to close this specific appeal. All funds will be used for their intended purpose being the restoration of 24 Sussex.
The Rideau Hall Foundation is accepting contributions in accordance with its established donations policies and the parameters approved for this project. These include that donations for this project may only be made by individuals and other charitable organizations. Donations cannot be made in cash or crypto currency. Corporate donations are not accepted, anonymous donations are not permitted, and donors are required to attest to being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Additional information regarding the campaign’s screening and eligibility processes will be made publicly available.
The Rideau Hall Foundation employs a risk-based approach to donor screening. As part of the screening process, donors are required to complete an attestation of their eligibility to donate. Enhanced screening, by an independent third party, including verification of Canadian citizenship/permanent residency is undertaken for larger gifts, valued at above $25,000, and in any circumstance where the Foundation determines additional review is appropriate, regardless of gift amount.
The RHF retains a clear right and full desertion to decline any donation. All donor names will be public and listed on the RHF website.
Yes, the maximum gift we will accept from any donor is currently $5 million, or 10% of the total fundraising goal.
Yes. You can make multiple gifts to the campaign so long as total giving does not exceed the cap of $5 million.
Yes. The Rideau Hall is a registered Canadian charity (Charitable # 848037248 RR0001) and we issue donation receipts for income tax purposes within Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.
Generally, a US based donor cannot deduct a Canadian charity’s receipt on a U.S. tax return. However, under the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty, donors can claim donations made to registered Canadian charities if the donor has a Canadian-source income, or if the charity qualifies for mutual recognition. The Rideau Hall Foundation does not qualify for “mutual recognition” (a status typically reserved for hospitals or universities). We advise that the individual seek appropriate independent advice from a tax accountant or lawyer specializing in charitable tax law.
All donors must attest to their eligibility, including being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Please print and fill out the Attestation of donor eligibility and mail it with your cheque. Cheques must show the full name of the donor and can be made payable to the Rideau Hall Foudnation. Please include “Restoring 24 Sussex” on the reference line, and send by mail to 9 Rideau Gate, Ottawa, ON K1M 1M6. Please do not mail cash.
First, thank you for your kind support! The public donor list is updated regularly as gift eligibility requirements are confirmed as met. Please check back soon.
